The other day I walked outside to do something in the yard, probably take something to the compost pile. I started outside from the screened in porch and walked across the back yard to the garden. I heard a scraping sound. When I initally heard the noise, I associated it with turtle for some reason. We've seen a box turtle around the house frequently so I just assumed it was our friendly neighborhood turtle.
I finished doing whatever I was planning on doing and continued to hear the scraping sound. I decided to go and hunt out the source of the noise fully expecting to find the turtle scraping up the side of the house or something.
To my surprise, I saw two turtles. Between the two of them they were making a scraping sound...I quickly left them alone. I thought it was pretty funny to run into such a thing and realized I had no understanding of turtle mating!
I came back inside and told the boys, "Guess what I saw outside? I saw two turtles and not just one!" I am a homeschool mom, but I wasn't going to share ALL the details and venture into studying that topic!
The boys were excited in response and thinking that it was cool to now have two turtles. The little guy who is full of truth and love and passion then quips, "I hope that they were mating!"
I think that my response was just a dumb look!
To add to the story, we were leaving a few days later and heard a crunch as we were backing out of the driveway. The elder boy appropriately said, "That didn't sound good." One of our turtles is no more. At this point we have no idea on what to expect as far as baby turtles or not! I think I need to get a turtles book from the library!
